The Von Braun Wheel: Space Station Concept That Won't Die

In 1952, Wernher von Braun published a series of articles in Collier's magazine describing a rotating wheel-shaped space station that would use centripetal force to simulate gravity. Seventy-four years later, the concept refuses to die — and for good reason.

The rotating station addresses the most fundamental biological challenge of long-duration spaceflight: bone density loss, muscle atrophy, and fluid redistribution caused by microgravity. ISS astronauts lose approximately 1-2% of bone density per month despite rigorous exercise protocols.

Modern iterations include Vast Space's planned Haven-2 station and various proposals from Axiom Space for next-generation commercial stations. The engineering challenges are well understood but expensive to solve.

The von Braun wheel endures because it solves a problem that no other technology has solved. Until artificial gravity pharmaceuticals exist, rotation remains the only viable approach to long-duration human habitation in space.
