Kessler Syndrome: The Cascade That Could Trap Us Here

In 1978, NASA scientist Donald Kessler proposed a scenario where the density of objects in low Earth orbit becomes high enough that collisions generate debris faster than it de-orbits naturally, creating a cascading chain reaction.

There are currently over 36,000 tracked objects larger than 10cm in Earth orbit, with an estimated 130 million fragments between 1mm and 10cm. The Starlink constellation alone has added over 6,000 satellites, with plans for 42,000 total.

A full Kessler cascade in LEO would not prevent spaceflight entirely, but it would dramatically increase costs and risks. Launch windows would need to account for debris clouds, and certain orbital slots could become unusable for decades.

For the multiplanetary thesis, Kessler Syndrome is an existential risk. If LEO becomes too dangerous to operate in economically, the entire infrastructure layer for cislunar and deep space operations becomes compromised. Active debris removal is a civilization-scale imperative.
