Helium-3 Mining on the Moon: Fantasy or Inevitability?

The Moon's regolith contains an estimated 1 million tons of helium-3, an isotope deposited by solar wind over billions of years. On Earth, helium-3 is extraordinarily rare and valuable. As a fusion fuel, it could theoretically power civilization for millennia.

The catch: we don't have working fusion reactors yet. The promise of lunar helium-3 mining depends on a technology that has been 'thirty years away' for the past sixty years. But recent advances in fusion are narrowing the gap.

For the lunar economy, helium-3 represents the long-term economic justification for permanent lunar presence. Water ice at the poles provides near-term value for propellant production, but helium-3 is the trillion-dollar prize that transforms the Moon from an outpost into an economic engine.
